About this symbol

The hyphen-minus is another typewriter compromise: one key for the hyphen, the minus sign and stand-ins for dashes. Unicode has separate characters for each, the hyphen ‐, the minus sign −, and the en dash and em dash, but this one is what every keyboard types.
